 Br. David Marten
President of the San Francisco Senatus

"St. Damien of Molokai, a Belgian Priest, was a member of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary. There is a rectory in Olema in Marin county, which once belonged to that order. Fr. Damien had two sisters who were nuns, and a brother priest, who helped him with his studies while he was in the Seminary. He was devoted to St. Francis Xavier, and because of his missionary zeal was set to Hawaii, where he worked caring for lepers.

The Leper colony there was isolated from the rest of the islands, and the lepers were not properly cared for or supplied, so their situation was dire. Fr. Damien's efforts resulted in the construction of new homes, a school and a Church, a hospital, farms, and return to civility and law, so that the lepers could now live decent lives. Five years before his death, he contracted leprosy, but continued to serve until his death. He was recognized early as a Saint, and was canonized in 2009. His mortal remains were viewed by thousands in San Francisco, as they were being transferred from Hawaii to Belgium in 1936. He is honored by Hawaii, as being one of the two state representatives with statues in the United States Capitol. His statue is unique - it shows him disfigured with leprosy".

The Church in Ireland hosted the worldwide 50th International Eucharistic Congress
                                             June 10th to 17th, 2012, in Dublin,

Young people were especially invited and sought after.
The Theme was: The Eucharist: Communion with Christ, and with One Another
Also of great significance was A New Evangelization, particularly important for the renewal of the Church in Ireland.
The Legion of Mary played an important role in the last Dublin Eucharistic Congress, in 1932.
The size of a Eucharistic Congress can be judged by the fact that 3000 volunteers were needed for this event.
