Archived Allocutio of the San Francisco Senatus
133rd Meeting, March 12th, 2015
Fr. Lawrence Goode, Spiritual Director of the San Francisco Senatus

"We remember Br. Bill Thompson [recently deceased President of the LA Senatus], and how much Br. Bill worked with, and helped, the San Francisco Senatus...St. Patrick's Day is near, [March 17th] and our Parish, St. Francis of Assisi, in East Palo Alto, would like to invite you Legionaries to our celebration. And do not fail to attend our Senatus Acies here in San Francisco...The members of Our Lady of Palestine Praesidium, live all over the archdiocese. This is a strength for helping the local Arabic population. Their Legionaries should get Legion Literature in Arabic, and evangelize non-Catholics, as well as their own. And let us remember their Pastor, Fr. Labib, who is ill, and needs our prayers...
The Legion is suffering from a lack of young people. We need to discuss this, and develop plans to recruit the young. We can do this in part during Door-to-Door evangelization, and remember that the elderly can participate in this, and that Our Lady protects us. When I speak of Evangelization to priests, it is almost all about the Legion of Mary. Don't be afraid of Door-to-Door...
All over the world, there is now active persecution of Christians, in Africa especially, for example Burundi, so we know that the devil is very real, and yes, present here in San Francisco. Our city is beautiful, but there is much here that is very opposed to the Church, for example, the strong attacks on Archbishop Cordileone. We must actively question what the world believes, and what is in our local newspapers. For example, Embryonic stem cell research has done nothing to help disease, whereas adult stem cell research has found cures.
And we must be with the Archbishop - read what he is saying, and what he has written, and share it with others."

[Note: Archbishop Cordileone's statement correctly and rightly affirms the Catholic Catechism, and the right to proclaim and teach Catholic doctrine in Catholic schools, and the right to demand a Catholic moral standard for teachers. The statement was released in April, 2015, and has resulted in Anti-Catholic remarks by Public Officials in San Francisco. One newspaper has 8 editorials critical of the Archbishop, posted on its web site. Legionaries should read the statement, and review the Catechism also. Fr. Goode mentioned in the March, Senatus, that Br. William Thompson, past President of the LA Senatus, passed away in February, 2015.  Br. Thompson did much for the entire West Coast Legion, which at one time comprised all of the far West States. Br. Thompson also wrote "Points of Uniformity", and an excellent online discussion, "The Art of Home Visitation" which is available at Legion of Mary    Please remember Br. Thompson in your prayers...

"Fr. Goode sends his blessing to all in the San Francisco Senatus"

Although the Year of Faith is now officially over, the Legion of Mary will continue its
works of Evangelization around the world, without ceasing, for the years to come.

(Fr. Goode, on the Importance of the Year of Faith, Porta Fide)

"The year of Faith, Porta Fide, declared by (Emeritus) Pope Benedict, began on October 11th, 2012. (This was two days prior to our annual Rosary Rally, which was first held in UN Plaza in San Francisco, on October 13th, and in 2014). The Porta Fide is the beginning of a new evangelization. Once again, I ask that you read the Pope's Apostolic Letter - [a link to his online document is here Porta Fidei and below on this page]. It is especially important for us to evangelize those who have abandoned the Faith, and walked away, and we know that this involves so many people in San Francisco and the Bay Area. We Legionaries must build bridges to those who have wandered away. I'd like to recommend some books, which will help in building bridges. One is Mathew Kelly's Rediscovering Catholicism, which is motivational, and the second is Catholicism, by Fr. Robert Barron, which explains the faith to intellectuals who have distanced themselves from the Church." Also, let me recommend another book on evangelization, by Diane Moczar, “Converts and Kingdoms. The Year of Faith is now officially ended, but Legion Evangelization will go on forever....

The Books recommended by Fr. Goode are available online at e.g.,, in both paperback and hardbound

With the Apostolic Letter of 11 October 2011, Porta fidei, Pope Benedict XVI declared a Year of Faith, which began on 11 October 2012, on the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Second Ecumenical Vatican Council, and has concluded on 24 November 2013, the Solemnity of our Lord Jesus Christ, Universal King.
Although the Year of Faith is officially over, every Legionary should read the Papal Document below.

The Apostolic Letter on the Year of Faith, Porta Fidei, by Pope Benedict XVI, can be found online.
