     Chaplain of the SF Senatus

"March is the month of the Great Celebration - of course, here I mean the Feast of St. Patrick, the honorary Patron Saint of the Legion of Mary. All of the Irish in East Palo Alto gather for his honor - all two of us! (East Palo Alto is a Latino community).
The early Irish did much more for the Church than the rest of the world - many of the writings and treasures of Rome were destroyed during the Barbarian Invasions, but the Irish, through the efforts of their Monks, preserved many manuscripts.

And this happened on several occasions - the latest being in the great World Wars, which resulted in the destruction of many libraries and books throughout Europe. It so happened that during the persecution of the Church in Spain, many books were thrown out, and used as ballast on ships. The Irish dockworkers did not dump this ballast - they took the books, including many classics, to Irish seminaries such as Maynooth. After the war, other seminaries throughout the world were able to replenish their destroyed libraries, by getting copies of the Irish ballast books....

At this time, the President of the Seminary praesidium is a Korean from Orange County. Two priests in the diocese of San Jose, were once also past presidents, and they are now helping with extension....

This is the Year of Faith, as promulgated by Pope Benedict. We should form an Evangelizing Team for the Senatus, which will examine our work, and methods - we should brainstorm with other councils, and learn from them. The Legion is the best experienced of any group in the Church, for home visitation, but we must still do better. We should look at our materials, and investigate new methods without watering down the Gospel. We should concentrate on evangelizing those who have walked away from the Church. And, how do we bring our message to young people? And an Apostolate for tourists is needed. We need also to promote the great vision of Don Bosco, and Pope John Paul II, to promote the Rosary and the Holy Eucharist. It will be difficult, especially because of the recent scandals, but this is the challenge for our Senatus - to lead the way for our Comitia and Curia, for new and better evangelization. (Please reread the Apostolic Letter of Pope Benedict - Porta Fidei - see below)

The vacancy of Praesidium offices is a matter of concern. Perhaps a list of former officers would be of help - they could go to those Praesidia which need officers, and fill positions. We also need Spiritual Directors - we might try approaching religious orders, to see if some would be interested.  Also, we need to schedule workshops and congresses, on a regular basis.

The 50th International Eucharistic Congress will be held in Dublin this year. During the last Congress in Dublin, in 1932, an American priest attended, and wrote about the Legion of Mary.  Another priest read the article, and started the first Praesidium in the USA. It would be a great experience, for any Senatus Member to attend...."

The October 2009 Allocutio, given by Fr. Goode at the San Francisco Senatus of the Legion of Mary

The Church in Ireland is inviting people worldwide to the 50th International Eucharistic Congress,
to be held from June 10th to 17th, 2012, in Dublin, for a chance to deepen in communion with Christ and others.
Young people are especially invited and sought after.
The Theme will be: The Eucharist: Communion with Christ, and with One Another
Also of great significance is A New Evangelization, particularly important for the renewal of the Church in Ireland.
The Legion of Mary played an important role in the last Dublin Eucharistic Congress, in 1932.
The size of a Eucharistic Congress can be judged by the fact that 3000 volunteers are needed for this event.
