Allocutio (June, 2009)
Fr. Lawrence Goode, Spiritual Director

Happy Father’s Day to all the fathers...
"I asked a visiting Benedictine priest from Africa,” Do they have the Legion in Tanzania?”  and he replied, “You would not be considered a real parish in Africa, unless there is a Praesidium of the Legion of Mary.”  The Legion continues to be the major evangelizing influence in Africa.  It brings in new people, and they in turn become Legionaries, and so the Church in Africa continues to grow rapidly...
Sts. Peter and Paul parish is located in a major tourist area in San Francisco, so many parishioners are from other locations, and this means it is difficult to recruit new members.  This is also true of other Praesidia, many of whom recruit members from outside the Parish. Also, the downtown Parishes often have more tourists coming to Mass than locals. We cannot allow this to stop the work of the Legion, although it is always nice to have people in the parish in your Praesidium.  In the city that may not always be the case, for example,  the Koreans come from all over the Bay Area, to participate in Praesidia at St. Michael’s Church. Somehow, they continue the work of their Apostolate. That love for the parish and love for the Legion will definitely do that - build your Praesidium! And the ideal is to be involved in the life of the parish, and to get new people to build for the future.  The results are always inspiring, for example, the Legion at Sts. Peter & Paul was given awards for their work in the hospital.  Retreats are a wonderful way to get closer to God, and your Praesidium is doing three a year - so here's an idea - have a special retreat just for Non-Catholics, or perhaps they can also experience the benefits of a Day of Recollection.  Some groups, mentioned in Maria Legionis, are already doing retreats for Non-Catholics, so your Praesidia can follow their example....
The influence of the Legion in San Jose, can be seen at St. Patrick's Seminary, because most of the Seminarians are from San Jose...
Oakland Comitium has now a Spiritual Director after 20 years.  What a great blessing, and perhaps the Legion in Oakland will now grow faster...North San Mateo Curia wants to start the Legion again San Bruno Church.  At one time, there was a Spanish speaking Praesidium there, and some really active Legionaries, many of whom have passed on.  Think of San Bruno and pray that the Legion may resume its work there...
The annual Grand Rosary Rally at Corpus Christi Church in downtown SF is coming up this week – a great opportunity to bring attention to our religion, and to make people aware of the fact that they are loved by God.  Come and join, and say the Rosary as we walk along the downtown streets of San Francisco. Rosaries and Miraculous medals will be given out to pedestrians” Fr. Goode gave his blessing before leaving.
