Archived Allocutio of the San Francisco Senatus 113th Meeting, July 11th, 2013
Fr. Lawrence Goode
Spiritual Director of the San Francisco Senatus

The topic of faith is central to our upcoming conference.  Begin to prepare spiritually, to have a renewal of our faith, to take a look at our faith, especially as Legionaries.  Our faith can be weakened by what we see and hear.  We should deepen our faith, get the new encyclical of Pope Francis and read it.  Read the handbook - our concluding prayer speaks of faith, faith, faith.  Realize that what we are praying, comes from St. Louis de Montfort.  The master-apprentice system of learning the apostolate is to learn by doing.  It is how mothers teach their children, show them how to do things, do it with them.  This shows our link to Mary, our true devotion to Mary.  The Seattle Comitium’s experience with websites shows us their importance.  The praesidium in East Palo Alto does door-to-door visitation every week.  The success of the Legion’s apostolate in the Tenderloin shows us that we shouldn’t be afraid.  We are protected by our Legion prayers.  A group in Redwood City wanted to do the apostolate, just like the Legion of Mary, but at the first home a man held up a butcher knife and the group just gave up.  Don’t cave in with the excuse that the Pastor won’t let us do door-to-door.  Our Lady disarms people.

Fr. Goode gave his blessing to all before leaving, and asked for prayers for the city of East Palo Alto, home of his parish.

(Fr. Goode, on the Importance of the Year of Faith, Porta Fide)

"The year of Faith, Porta Fide, declared by (Emeritus) Pope Benedict, began on October 11th, 2012. (This was two days prior to our annual Rosary Rally, which was first held in UN Plaza in San Francisco, on October 13th). The Porta Fide is the beginning of a new evangelization. Once again, I ask that you read the Pope's Apostolic Letter - [a link to his online document is here Porta Fidei and below on this page]. It is especially important for us to evangelize those who have abandoned the Faith, and walked away, and we know that this involves so many people in San Francisco and the Bay Area. We Legionaries must build bridges to those who have wandered away. I'd like to recommend some books, which will help in building bridges. One is Mathew Kelly's Rediscovering Catholicism, which is motivational, and the second is Catholicism, by Fr. Robert Barron, which explains the faith to intellectuals who have distanced themselves from the Church." Also, let me recommend another book on evangelization, by Diane Moczar, “Converts and Kingdoms.  You can also read True Devotion online, Link, or, if you want to purchase the book, True Devotion, or for Kindle, Link     If you would like to purchase True Devotion in Spanish  Link.  *

The Books recommended by Fr. Goode are available online at e.g.,, in both paperback and hardbound

With the Apostolic Letter of 11 October 2011, Porta fidei, Pope Benedict XVI declared a Year of Faith, which began on 11 October 2012, on the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Second Ecumenical Vatican Council, and will conclude on 24 November 2013, the Solemnity of our Lord Jesus Christ, Universal King.

The Apostolic Letter on the Year of Faith, Porta Fidei, by Pope Benedict XVI, can be found online.
