San Francisco Senatus of the Legion of Mary
Allocutio by Fr. Lawrence Goode, Senatus Spiritual Director, given at the July 2009, San Francisco Senatus (News Notes)

Allocutio (July, 2009)
Fr. Lawrence Goode, Spiritual Director

One interesting thing about St. Patrick's Praesidium is its husband and wife teams - three teams are very unusual, and I am glad that husbands and wives can work in harmony together for the Legion of Mary.  And, another real success story!  St. Patrick's Patrician group has 21 years in existence, with an average attendance of 25 people. When you see something going so well, please ask about their procedures, so you can learn from them.  This is a good example of the Legion master-apprentice system.  Also outstanding, is the Grand Rosary Rally, 15 years old now, with the boys serving and the girls giving out Rosaries.  And the Praesidium has other great works – Leading the Senatus Bookbarrow at Civic Center, and their excellent attendance at the Senatus Apostolates to the Crowd.  Very interesting!  It shows that they understand the master-apprentice system.  When you get new people in the Legion, get them out immediately with people who have the knowledge and the experience. That’s how new workers learn!   And that’s one reason why the Senatus sponsors these crowd apostolates...
Some Legionaries have decades of experience with the Legion, working at Apostolates and PPCs, like Ed Miller, and it's good to see them again. Ed has to travel an hour or more to get to Senatus, on crowded rush hour freeways, so, thanks for coming, Br. Ed.
...Fr. Treacy from Seattle is retiring at age 90!  Surely this shows the Legion is a fountain of youth, and also, how hard it is to retire from the Legion when so much work needs to be done.
....Salinas Curia did some excellent work this year, when their powerful prayers helped close down two abortion clinics.
...South San Mateo Curia also has a great approach, since all their Praesidia have spiritual Directors, and one Praesidium even has 3 or 4!  It’s encouraging to hear that St. Gregory is starting a second Praesidium, and also that a Congress is planned.  This is the outstanding result, when Legionaries persevere and work hard for decades, showing their courage and firm faith.
In the past, I have often spoken of the need to return again and again to the streets of our own Parishes. This will result in more new Legionaries, and more new Praesidia, and this in turn enables us to have even more Parish contacts. Let us never forget what Fr. Ryan stressed,  the need to go and befriend neighborhood people, returning often, and as a result, influencing them to join the Legion.
Portland Curia is only two years old, and yet is making plans for more extensive work.  Encourage them and pray for them, so that we can look forward to them having the same outstanding successes as the Seattle Comitium.
Also, if you should happen to travel up there, attend their Curia and encourage them.  It's also a good idea to attend Legion meetings wherever you travel - lend your support to the Legion everywhere.
The joke of the month:  A little boy knelt and said his prayers to God: "Give us this day, our daily bread, and please, do you think you could spread some peanut butter and jelly on it?" (You could ask for a bagel with lox, but that would be the choice of a different religion).
Fr. Goode gave his blessing before leaving.
