Archived Allocutio of the San Francisco Senatus 107th Meeting, January, 2013
by
Fr. Lawrence Goode
Spiritual Director of the San Francisco Senatus

"Yesterday, Archbishop Cordileone had a meeting with all the priests in the San Francisco Diocese, to discuss current important issues regarding life, marriage and religious liberty.

The American Catholic Bishops have asked for four things:
(1) Having a Eucharistic Holy Hour around the last Sunday of every month
(2) The daily Rosary
(3) Fasting and abstaining from meat on Fridays; and
(4) Joining the rally, a Fortnight for Freedom, in June 2013. [The first rally was held during June 21st to July 4th, 2012,
and there will be another rally, this year, 2013, also from June 21st to July 4th - details will be in your local Catholic paper]

The Archbishop suggested that this be part of our commitment to the Year of Faith.  A panel of four priests, including myself, discussed this at the meeting.  My contribution was that Evangelization would be greatly helped by parish priests supporting the Legion of Mary. There were other suggestions to help bring people to the Church - for example, a priest from Cork advocated that Church bells be rung to remind people of Mass. The Feasts of the Epiphany and Baptism of the Lord are about bringing the message to the world, inviting people to the Church.  We have to encourage Catholics to invite other people, and to follow up with converts, since one out of three converts no longer attend Church after a five or ten year period.  Converts must be encourage to get involved.

We need prayer for the Church in the USA, and for protecting marriage. Traditional Marriage is the only institution in the world, which unites fathers and mothers and children.  This is the key point to make, and it must be defended.  We must also protect our Catholic religious liberty, which is under attack by the HHS Mandate [The Health and Human Service Mandate, by the Obama administration, requires Catholic schools and institutions to provide abortifacients to employees]. So far, several Catholic groups including EWTN, and Priests for Life, have won their cases in court against the HHS mandate. We must make the public aware that religious freedom is important, and Legion Officers should develop a strategy to help people to fight against these attacks, and fight for the Catholic faith. [For more information, and to join the fight, refer to the web page of Stand Up for Religious Freedom. There will be nationwide rallies held on March 23rd]

The Walk for Life [now completed, with photos on the home page] is coming up and it gets bigger every year.  It is good to hear from Our Lady of the Annunciation Praesidium at St. Gabriel’s, and wonderful to hear that the Seattle Comitium is getting so many involved in the Legion of Mary.  I hope the Alaska Legionaries will try to re-open the praesidia at the town of North Pole."

(Quote from the June Allocutio, by Fr. Goode)

"The year of Faith, Porta Fide, declared by Pope Benedict, begins on October 11th, 2012. (This is two days prior to our Rosary Rally, which will be held in UN Plaza in San Francisco, on October 13th). The Porta Fide is the beginning of a new evangelization. Once again, I ask that you read the Pope's Apostolic Letter - [a link to his online document is here Porta Fidei and below on this page]. It is especially important for us to evangelize those who have abandoned the Faith, and walked away, and we know that this involves so many people in San Francisco and the Bay Area. We Legionaries must build bridges to those who have wandered away. I'd like to recommend some books, which will help in building bridges. One is Mathew Kelly's Rediscovering Catholicism, which is motivational, and the second is Catholicism, by Fr. Robert Barron, which explains the faith to intellectuals who have distanced themselves from the Church." Also, let me recommend another book on evangelization, by Diane Moczar, “Converts and Kingdoms.  You can also read True Devotion online, Link, or, if you want to purchase the book, True Devotion, or for Kindle, Link     If you would like to purchase True Devotion in Spanish  Link.  *
