Archived Allocutio of the San Francisco Senatus
132nd Meeting, February 12th, 2015
Fr. Lawrence Goode, Spiritual Director of the San Francisco Senatus

[Note: A preamble, discussing the Archdiocesan statement on Catholic teachings for Catholic Schools and Staff: Archbishop Cordileone's statement correctly and rightly affirms the Catholic Catechism, and the right of Catholics to proclaim Catholic doctrine in Catholic schools, and why it must be taught in Catholic schools. The statement was released in April, 2015, and has resulted in Anti-Catholic remarks by Public Officials in San Francisco, as well as editorials very critical of Catholics in local newspapers. Legionaries should read the statement, and review the Catechism also. (link)   Archdiocesan Statement ]

                                                              Fr. Goode's Allocutio:
"We must pray for the Archbishop, who is under attack, and the attacks continue on other Catholic priests, such as Blessed Juniper Serra. [The attacks on Fr. Serra imply that he was responsible for maltreating the local Indian Tribes]. "But when the historians compare the treatment of the Indians on the West Coast, to those on the East Coast, they found that those in the West Coast were much better treated - they were educated and taught how to build. It is true, however, that many Indians caught European diseases, which caused a high death rate. When the Missions were taken away from the Franciscans, and given to the soldiers, the native society never recovered. We need to know this real history. Blessed Juniper Serra stood up for the Indians, against the soldiers, and he was a real hero. Soon, he will become a canonized Saint....
I am proud of the Spanish Praesidium in our parish
- their meetings are exciting, and membership is increasing. Door to door visitation makes Legion reports much more exciting."

Fr. Goode mentioned in the March, Senatus, that Br. William Thompson, past President of the LA Senatus, passed away in February, 2015.  Br. Thompson did much for the entire West Coast Legion, which at one time comprised all of the far West States. Br. Thompson also wrote "Points of Uniformity", and an excellent online discussion, "The Art of Home Visitation" which is available at Legion of Mary    Please remember Br. Thompson in your prayers...

"Fr. Goode sends his blessing to all in the San Francisco Senatus"

Although the Year of Faith is now officially over, the Legion of Mary will continue its
works of Evangelization around the world, without ceasing, for the years to come.

(Fr. Goode, on the Importance of the Year of Faith, Porta Fide)

"The year of Faith, Porta Fide, declared by (Emeritus) Pope Benedict, began on October 11th, 2012. (This was two days prior to our annual Rosary Rally, which was first held in UN Plaza in San Francisco, on October 13th, and in 2014). The Porta Fide is the beginning of a new evangelization. Once again, I ask that you read the Pope's Apostolic Letter - [a link to his online document is here Porta Fidei and below on this page]. It is especially important for us to evangelize those who have abandoned the Faith, and walked away, and we know that this involves so many people in San Francisco and the Bay Area. We Legionaries must build bridges to those who have wandered away. I'd like to recommend some books, which will help in building bridges. One is Mathew Kelly's Rediscovering Catholicism, which is motivational, and the second is Catholicism, by Fr. Robert Barron, which explains the faith to intellectuals who have distanced themselves from the Church." Also, let me recommend another book on evangelization, by Diane Moczar, “Converts and Kingdoms. The Year of Faith is now officially ended, but Legion Evangelization will go on forever....

The Books recommended by Fr. Goode are available online at e.g.,, in both paperback and hardbound

With the Apostolic Letter of 11 October 2011, Porta fidei, Pope Benedict XVI declared a Year of Faith, which began on 11 October 2012, on the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Second Ecumenical Vatican Council, and has concluded on 24 November 2013, the Solemnity of our Lord Jesus Christ, Universal King.
