Archived Allocutio of the San Francisco Senatus 118th Meeting, December 5th, 2013
Fr. Lawrence Goode, Spiritual Director of the San Francisco Senatus

"Let me encourage you to read the book about Frank Duff by Father Bradshaw, who was a close personal friend of Frank for more than 20 years, and who knew him as the great Marian Apostle of the 20th Century.

[Frank Duff, Founder of the Legion of Mary - Montfort Publications. The book is available at,, and other retailers for $6.95].

Recently the Chronicle had a good article on the Pope’s almoner [an almoner is the person responsible for distributing alms and relief for the poor.] Monsignor Konrad Krajewski is the Vatican Almoner, a centuries-old job – and Francis has stressed the importance of the job to make it a hands-on extension of his own personal charity. Msgr. Krajewski has described how Francis redefined the little known office of papal almoner and explained the true meaning of giving - “The Holy Father told me at the beginning: ‘You can sell your desk. You don’t need it. You need to get out of the Vatican. Don’t wait for people to come ringing. You need to go out and look for the poor,’” Msgr. Krajewski said.
There is a rumor that the Pope has gone out into the streets to help the poor [This was his practice as Archbishop of Buenos Aires].  Perhaps, in a similar way, we should invite the Bishops to get out of the office, and go an Apostolate to the Crowd.  They could learn how to do it from the Legion of Mary.

Also there was also an article about Victory Outreach, about helping women get off the streets by praying with them. [Victory Outreach is a fellowship of churches of many different denominations, with a common purpose - each church runs at least one rehabilitation or special services home]...

We ought to go out and share Jesus with people - there’s a battlefield out there and we have what they need.  We could talk to people about Scott Hahn, [you can see his shows on EWTN] who was formerly Protestant and anti-Catholic, but came to the Church by asking himself - What is the basis of the protestant teaching “sola scriptura”, and where is it found in the Bible?  He has brought many into the Church.  Scott has written many books, notably Rome, Sweet Home, and the Catholics for a Reason series [available from Amazon and Barnes and Noble]...

This month is a wonderful time to evangelize, during which we celebrate the feasts of Immaculate Conception, Our Lady of Guadalupe, and Christmas.  Keep extending the Legion.  The idea for a Rosary Crusade in San Jose is a good one.  There are many young priests in San Jose who were Legionaries in the seminary.  The priests in Oakland could be reminded that “Legionaries do door-to-door in East Palo Alto, and if we do it there, it can be done in Oakland.”

(Before leaving, Fr. Goode gave his blessing to Senatus)

Although the Year of Faith is now officially over, the Legion of Mary will continue its works of Evangelization around the world, without ceasing, for the years to come.

(Fr. Goode, on the Importance of the Year of Faith, Porta Fide)

"The year of Faith, Porta Fide, declared by (Emeritus) Pope Benedict, began on October 11th, 2012. (This was two days prior to our annual Rosary Rally, which was first held in UN Plaza in San Francisco, on October 13th). The Porta Fide is the beginning of a new evangelization. Once again, I ask that you read the Pope's Apostolic Letter - [a link to his online document is here Porta Fidei and below on this page]. It is especially important for us to evangelize those who have abandoned the Faith, and walked away, and we know that this involves so many people in San Francisco and the Bay Area. We Legionaries must build bridges to those who have wandered away. I'd like to recommend some books, which will help in building bridges. One is Mathew Kelly's Rediscovering Catholicism, which is motivational, and the second is Catholicism, by Fr. Robert Barron, which explains the faith to intellectuals who have distanced themselves from the Church." Also, let me recommend another book on evangelization, by Diane Moczar, “Converts and Kingdoms.  You can also read True Devotion online, Link, or, if you want to purchase the book, True Devotion, or for Kindle, Link     If you would like to purchase True Devotion in Spanish  Link.  *

With the Apostolic Letter of 11 October 2011, Porta fidei, Pope Benedict XVI declared a Year of Faith, which began on 11 October 2012, on the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Second Ecumenical Vatican Council, and has concluded on 24 November 2013, the Solemnity of our Lord Jesus Christ, Universal King.

The Apostolic Letter on the Year of Faith, Porta Fidei, by Pope Benedict XVI, can be found online.
