Archived Allocutio of the San Francisco Senatus 106th Meeting, December, 2012
Fr. Lawrence Goode
Spiritual Director of the San Francisco Senatus

"My Parish, St. Francis of Assisi in East Palo Alto, is south of San Francisco. There are two great Feast Days which are very important to our largely Spanish Speaking parish: Our Lady of Guadalupe, and the Immaculate Conception. The great tilma of Our Lady of Guadalupe, showing her portrait, is enshrined in Our Lady of Guadalupe Basilica in Mexico City. Our Lady appeared to Juan Diego, an Aztec convert, on December 12th, 1531. As a miraculous sign, Her image was imprinted on Juan Diego's cloak, his Tilma. The image has been examined and shows many intricate details, some still under investigation. Because it also shows the person of Juan Diego, the Tilma has great importance for the Mexican people. After the Spanish arrived, for ten years, there were few conversions to the faith, since the native peoples did not understand Spanish. But the Image on the Tilma gave understanding of the Catholic Faith, and the conversions began. On December 12th, 2031, we will be celebrating the 500th anniversary of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

The new Archbishop of San Francisco, Salvatore Cordileone, needs our support. The Archbishop is the head of the U.S. Catholic Bishops' Committee on Marriage. Our Church teaching on marriage is not just from the Church, but also Greek and Roman law. He recently wrote a recent Pastoral letter to ask for prayer and penance, and to have Eucharistic Adoration every last Sunday of the month. The Legion must promote his wishes.

We also must support our Holy Father. He said a state without justice is a band of robbers, and justice means law, and that includes the just laws of marriage. (And since this Allocutio, Pope Benedict announced his retirement, and so we must also pray for his health and well being).

More on the Legion: More extension efforts are needed. One way is to have Columban drives. The second way is to repeatedly visit particular areas of a parish, in our door-to-door visitation, and recruit interested parishioners."

(Quote from the June Allocutio, by Fr. Goode)

"The year of Faith, Porta Fide, declared by Pope Benedict, begins on October 11th, 2012. (This is two days prior to our Rosary Rally, which will be held in UN Plaza in San Francisco, on October 13th). The Porta Fide is the beginning of a new evangelization. Once again, I ask that you read the Pope's Apostolic Letter - [a link to his online document is here Porta Fidei and below on this page]. It is especially important for us to evangelize those who have abandoned the Faith, and walked away, and we know that this involves so many people in San Francisco and the Bay Area. We Legionaries must build bridges to those who have wandered away. I'd like to recommend some books, which will help in building bridges. One is Mathew Kelly's Rediscovering Catholicism, which is motivational, and the second is Catholicism, by Fr. Robert Barron, which explains the faith to intellectuals who have distanced themselves from the Church." Also, let me recommend another book on evangelization, by Diane Moczar, “Converts and Kingdoms.  You can also read True Devotion online, Link, or, if you want to purchase the book, True Devotion, or for Kindle, Link     If you would like to purchase True Devotion in Spanish  Link.  *

The Books recommended by Fr. Goode are available online at e.g.,, in both paperback and hardbound

With the Apostolic Letter of 11 October 2011, Porta fidei, Pope Benedict XVI declared a Year of Faith. This year will begin on 11 October 2012, on the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Second Ecumenical Vatican Council, and will conclude on 24 November 2013, the Solemnity of our Lord Jesus Christ, Universal King.
