Archived San Francisco Senatus Allocutio, August, 2012
Fr. Lawrence Goode
Spiritual Director of the SF Senatus

(Quote from the June Allocutio, by Fr. Goode)

"The year of Faith, Porta Fide, declared by Pope Benedict, begins on October 11th, 2012. (This is two days prior to our Rosary Rally, which will be held in UN Plaza in San Francisco, on October 13th). The Porta Fide is the beginning of a new evangelization. Once again, I ask that you read the Pope's Apostolic Letter - [a link to his online document is here Porta Fidei and below on this page]. It is especially important for us to evangelize those who have abandoned the Faith, and walked away, and we know that this involves so many people in San Francisco and the Bay Area. We Legionaries must build bridges to those who have wandered away. I'd like to recommend some books, which will help in building bridges. One is Mathew Kelly's Rediscovering Catholicism, which is motivational, and the second is Catholicism, by Fr. Robert Barron, which explains the faith to intellectuals who have distanced themselves from the Church." Also, let me recommend another book on evangelization, by Diane Moczar, “Converts and Kingdoms.”

                                                                        The August Allocutio

"On the Feast day of St. Francis, October 4th, Bishop Cordileone will be installed as the new Archbishop of San Francisco. Our Senatus should send a congratulatory note to both Archbishop Cordileone, and Archbishop Niederauer (now retiring).
[SF Senatus purchased space in the Archdiocesan newspaper, for this welcoming note - see  Home ]
I will do my part, by welcoming Archbishop Cordileone to my parish of St. Francis, in East Palo Alto. He needs lots of love and support, and He should feel welcome because St. Francis is predominantly Spanish speaking, and the Archbishop was also once pastor of a Spanish parish....
Once again, we have the problem of low attendance at Senatus. We should establish an Ad Hoc committee, to examine this problem, determine those who are not attending, and recommend ways to improve. This will show Dublin that we are serious about our attendance....
Mother of Light Praesidium (from St. Peter & Paul in SF), gave an excellent report - the Salesians have a great tradition of devotion to Mary. Stockton Comitium is doing very well, and we should help them with our support and prayers. Sacramento Comitium encompasses a huge Diocese, with wonderful young priests who were in the Legion of Mary, in the Seminary, including the former Seminary Praesidium President. We need to make sure that they continue to be involved with the Legion. And, the PPC in Fremont should bring great results - PPCs always bring people to the Church, even in the most difficult places, for example, a past PPC which we held in Utah....
Recently, I attended a retreat for Priests, and there were discussions on Topics about many new problems confronting the Church, such as Stem Cell Research. These subjects are complex, and many people often just agree with the opinions advanced by Science and the Media. The Church seems often alone and isolated in its opposition to Stem Cell Research. We must clarifiy and explain the Church's position for the Catholic population, and to everyone. But it is true that the Church is pre-eminent in confirming and supporting all of the moral issues confronting us today - and there is also the tradition of the natural law, which we have had for two thousand years, and which should not be changed now. The Church has a long and rich tradition of bringing the moral culture to the world, and we should continue this tradition, by promoting the Catechism, and Catholic education."

The Church in Ireland hosted the worldwide 50th International Eucharistic Congress

                                             June 10th to 17th, 2012, in Dublin,

Young people were especially invited and sought after.
The Theme was: The Eucharist: Communion with Christ, and with One Another
Also of great significance was A New Evangelization, particularly important for the renewal of the Church in Ireland.
The Legion of Mary played an important role in the last Dublin Eucharistic Congress, in 1932.
The size of a Eucharistic Congress can be judged by the fact that 3000 volunteers were needed for this event.

With the Apostolic Letter of 11 October 2011, Porta fidei, Pope Benedict XVI declared a Year of Faith.
